I can already feel the summer movie season begining to ramp up. It is obviously still Spring but it has become clear to me that studios are pushing further and further into the spring with what should be summer releases. The past few years, the summer season has been kicked off by Marvel Studios with the first major superhero film of each year but this time it looks like Lionsgate is going to get the drop on everyone with The Cabin in the Woods. While the movie looks to be a simple horror film, I know for a fact that The Cabin in the Woods is much more. Written by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, this film was shot in 2009 and has been lingering on a shelf, waiting for just the right time to be unleashed on the world. Currently it has a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and as of this moment, I have not read a bad review. I imagine that the film is going to be something along the lines of Scream, a well written tightly wound thriller/who-done-it which plays off of the classic horror movie tropes. I don’t know if this is going to blow away the box office this weekend or if it even has enough push behind it to topple The Hunger Games from its perch. I am almost sure though that it will have good word of mouth which may translate into some staying power. Are any of the rest of you up for this one?
